A Lego EarthBound Set Approaches?

Over the years, many passionate MOTHER fans have reimagined their favourite characters and set pieces from the trilogy in LEGO form. While our imaginations have been set to roam free, there has never officially existed a building-brick MOTHER set in the limelight…until now! The website LEGO Ideas, which allows fans to propose new and exciting products to the company itself, has presented an EarthBound LEGO set, and it’s recently been gaining a lot of traction!

In October 2019, megaMit, a MOTHER community member, was inspired to create a LEGO EarthBound proposal to be featured on LEGO Ideas. Previously, he had created a Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set, and while impressive in concept, unfortunately didn’t gain enough supporters to be officially reviewed for production. Now, megaMit has come back full-force in suggesting an immaculately-detailed Dungeon Man set! Featuring an openable interior as well as several accessories (including a Slimy Little Pile, Gift Box, and yes — even our favourite little Yellow Submarine!), this set surely looks like childhood dreams come true. In the project’s description, megaMit goes into detail on what inspired him to pursue this proposal:

“To me, the EarthBound games are some of my favorite pieces of media of all time, and a Lego set for the game would be a dream come true. I made sure to translate Dungeon Man as accurately as possible while retaining a sense of playability that taps into the original wonder of having him join your adventure all those years ago”.

Meanwhile, megaMit has also pursued experimental side builds with the EarthBound theme, including a complete reimagination of Onett in brick form, as well as enemy designs such as the Lesser Mook and Dali’s Clock. As megaMit himself explains, the Dungeon Man set was selected as the prime proposal over Onett because, “…the concept never quite sat well with me — while it’s a pretty set, it’s also huge! Onett in its entirety dominates Dungeon Man in its piece size — however, Dungeon Man stands to be a more interactive and fun playset”.

Only time will tell if this set gains enough supporters to be further evaluated by the LEGO team. Right now, the set sits at 640 supporters, with 288 days left to reach the 1,000 threshold to be granted into the next phase. If it hits 1,000 supporters, the deadline will extend by another year to hopefully gain 5,000 supporters. LEGO Ideas has a history of not only video game submissions, but Nintendo ones as well! Famously, in 2013, another user under the name of Mingles started a The Legend of Zelda LEGO-themed proposal. The sets included accessories from titles such as Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, gaining much attention from news outlets such as IGN and Kotaku. The project reached the highest milestone of 10,000 supporters, officially sending the project to the review board for production. As impressive as Mingle’s concepts were, the series was not put into production, as stated here by the LEGO Team:

The Legend of Zelda project shows broad support among gaming enthusiasts. This project has provided great inspiration and concept work for what could be a very nice product.

However, multiple new element molds would be required to create the minifigures for such a product, and the expense of these molds means that the Legend of Zelda project unfortunately does not pass the LEGO Review on the basis of the business case”.

Lego has since pursued a license of Nintendo products, seen with their Super Mario K’Nex series. Certainly, they aren’t unfamiliar with working alongside Nintendo, so this EarthBound set isn’t completely outside the realm of possibility! If you’d like to see the Dungeon Man set alongside others to see the light of day, please check out the page on LEGO Ideas’ website, and consider supporting it. There is much potential to be found in this project!
